Join The Current {Part I} Engaging Our Children in Current Affairs

Join The Current {Part I}
Engaging Our Children in Current Affairs

The importance of current affairs and information literacy for our children.

     1. Curiosity!!

Sparking curiosity about what's happening around us is the primary reason why current affairs are important for our children. Our children need to grow up wanting to know and should be aware of what is happening in their family, community, country and in the world. Moreover, being aware is not enough. As parents, we can encourage the children to start thinking about the different issues and engage them in a conversation on their thoughts or how they can contribute.

      2. Topics for conversation

Moreover, current affairs are important because they can serve as a common topic for conversation within family or children among their friends. My daughter is always eager to share with us or with her friends on what she has read.

      3. Develops a sense of identity and awareness

Having an awareness in current affairs will further develop our children's sense of identity and character An individual who has a strong sense of self awareness would eventually become a citizen who will care and want to contribute to the community, nation and world.

      4. Ready source of reading material

The newspaper is a ready and wonderful source of reading material. There are many well written articles and hence, it serves as a fresh reading material daily. Moreover, thanks to "Today", we can get a free copy of newspaper everyday.

      5. Developing a balance opinion

With so much information flowing through this digital age, there are many different opinions and perspectives to so many different issues. Hence, it is important to teach children to read up on the issues from different sources before forming an objective opinion. This is where children can learn about the reliability of the sources and then to decide whether to trust its opinion or not.

Should current affairs education be left to parents, teachers, or the children themselves?

Current affairs education should start at home and schools should support as well. Eventually, the children themselves must learn to read up and take an interest.

As the saying goes " Education starts at home".
We want to encourage the love of learning. Learning about our environment and what's happening around us is basic because it affects our lives. For instance, issues such 'Our transport system', 'Terrorism', 'Aging population' directly affects our daily life.

Parents should be the primary source of information. This is because, many a times, current affairs can have many perspectives. So for my young children, I would like to provide my perspective first and be the primary 'influencer' to them.

But of course, I welcome other perspectives as they can widen the horizon for the kids. This is where schools and teachers play an important role. They can generate interest and provide alternatives perspectives which will encourage the children to think deeper into the issues.

In fact, I am so thankful this year that my P3 girl, Natalie has a wonderful English Teacher, Mrs Soh who spends time talking about current issues to the class very frequently. My daughter then comes back and share with me about what the issue is about and what she thinks about it.

Therefore, current affairs should become part of our lives. Parents, teachers and children themselves must work together to learn about current affairs, to develop a balance/objective perspective and perhaps to think about how we can help, contribute or do our part to change things.

How we can incorporate current affairs education into out-of-school learning?

1. Flipping through the newspaper daily.
The newspaper is a quick and effortless way of scanning through current affairs and getting the gist of what's happening.

Just by flipping through today's Today(7 Mar 2016), issues such as 'Keeping a healthy lifestyle', 'The power of social media influencers', ' Jobs for senior citizens, mums and students' and what's happening in our neighbouring country pops up.

Keeping it simple at the start .
--> Read an article, followed by a short discussion.
At the start,  I encourage my daughter, Natalie to flip through the 'Today newspaper' quickly and I taught her how to scan through the headlines to look for an article that she is interested in to read. After reading, I will ask her what the issue is about and what she thinks about it. At first, her common reply is "huh? I don't even understand." So, I will take time to read with her and explain to her. As time passes, she got used to reading reports and could understand better.

--> Cut it out and write down your thoughts, once per week.
After she got used to reading articles in the newspaper,  I actually got her to cut it out and paste the article onto a notebook and encourage her to down her thoughts. I wanted her to practice writing and also to see if she would have a different opinion later. Moreover, writing down means we can always come back to the topic later. She is encouraged to cut out and write down her thoughts for at least 1 article per week.

--> It becomes a habit.
Nowadays, Natalie would simply pick up the newspaper and read. She definitely reads more than an article a day. She is very eager to report and share with me what she has read. The themes that she reads about has widen. Previously, she sticks to very short articles - usually about schools or social media.

So, start slow, small and simple. Once it takes off and becomes a habit, it becomes easier.

2. Sharing my views with her.

Sometimes, if I come across an interesting issue or video (normally on my smartphone), I would get her to read or watch it as well.  We will then exchange our views and have a discussion. For instance, some time ago, there was a video of a social experiment done to trick girls via online chatting apps to come out and meet up. The girls' parents were kept in the loop of the experiment. When the girls turned up, they were shocked to see their parents instead of the young boy that they were suppose to meet. Many parents at the start of the experiment were confident that their daughters will not be tricked, but all were disappointed. Hence, this became a perfect video for me to talk to Natalie about the dangers online and online predators.

3. Watching news or documentary on television.

I turn on the news on channel 8 sometimes. This kills 2 birds with one stone as firstly, they are expose to mandarin and secondly, they get to watch the news.

Moreover, there are many documentaries and interesting programmes on Channel NewsAsia. They explore many different themes like food waste, poverty or even lives of foreign workers.

4. Learn through Play -  SingaPlorers

SingaPlorers is a card game on Singapore's Nation Building.

As the Chief game Architect, I designed this cooperative game where the players have to play cards to support each other in overcoming the challenges that Singapore faces. In playing the game, the players will experience working cooperatively, negotiating or even sometimes have to make small sacrifices to overcome the constant challenges and work together towards achieving peace and progress in Singapore.

The game focuses on these 4 main challenges:
  • Building a national identity and fostering social cohesion
  • Safeguarding our homeland through defence and security
  • Declining and aging population
  • Limited resources
SingaPlorers aims to help players to understand that the success behind Singapore is a result of the constant work and cooperation of all Singaporeans. Also, in playing SingaPlorers, players will see the cause and effects of events or policies Singapore have adopted. Players will learn about Singapore’s past and present challenges in a fun and engaging way.

Here are some other suggestions to get your children interested in current affairs.

About Join The Current

Join The Current is a literacy campaign pioneered by four NTU undergraduates who share a vision and a belief that curiosity about world affairs can help the new generation of mediasavvy children build resilience to traverse their lives as global citizens and leaders.

This campaign is launched as part of a final year project from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

It hopes to engage children aged 10 to 14 to develop an interest in current affairs and inform parents of the importance and relevance of current affairs.

Through the campaign, the team hopes to create a national conversation around young students developing a curiosity for current affairs, thereby shaping future generations of active citizens and an informed public.

Disney On Ice: Magical Ice Festival

Disney On Ice: Magical Ice Festival

It's back! It's back!!
Disney on Ice is back!!!

Disney On Ice presents Magical Ice Festival, this school holidays! From 11 March 2016 to 20 March 2016. Get your tickets now

It's a show that you definitely want to catch!! Trust me, it's worth it. It's gonna be such a magical night for your child(ren) and yourself.

My children grew up on Disney On Ice. Ever since we watched Disney On Ice in 2012, the kids, my hubby and I are hooked. Here are some photos from previous years when we attended Disney On Ice. Look at those happy faces. Serious! Even the adults will be so amazed.

Here are some reasons why we watch the Disney on Ice show year after year.

1. It's a chance to dress up.

It's every little girl's dream to be a princess. Why not let them dream and be a real princess for a night.

If your daughter(s) have many, many, many princesses' dresses like mine, you can get them ready as they will be so excited to dress up for the show. This is the current collection for my daughters. My guess is that the Elsa costume is gonna be their choice for this year.

Don't worry about your little girl being the only one that dress up. There will be many many princesses watching the show.

Mummies, while at it, don't forget the tiara or the Anna/Elsa's braids.

2. The skating is absolutely awesome.

Awesome is an understatement. Really! You got to watch it for yourself to feel the magic. As an adult, I enjoy the skating. The jumps, spins, lifts are all so well choreographed. Here are some photographs of the skaters for this year's Disney on Ice.

3. It's a sing-along session every single time.

To make it more meaningful for my younger children, I will print out and go through the song lyrics with them. Words recognition time!!!

"Let it go, let it go

Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go

Turn away and slam the door
I don't care
what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on.
The cold never bothered me anyway"

Everyone knows this song and can sing this song. I'm sure the whole stadium will be roaring with the children's voice when this song is being sung this year. My children enjoy the singing and they will even dance along.

4. The costume and the set is beautiful.

Do you know that:

  • The average size of the ice skating surface is 140ft [42m] x 70ft [21m].
  • There are approximately 180 costumes presented at one Disney On Ice show.
  •  And more than 100 people work on these costumes .
  •  It takes 18 trucks to transport all production equipment for set-up.
  •  And it takes between 12-15 hours to set up one Disney On Ice show.
  •  But just about 4 hours to tear down the entire production.
  •  Over 80 different colours of paint are used on the 183 props for this production.
  •  Each performer may change up to 8 costumes in one show.

It's gonna be truly a great visual spectacle.

5. The tickets are very affordable.

The view of the stage is very clear no matter where you sit at. I have tried CAT 1, 3 and 4 in the past years. You can see the performance very clearly. Of course, seats from CAT 3 and 4 will be further away and the characters will appear smaller to you. But the magic is same every where. So book your tickets now... if you have never been to Disney On ice, you have to bring your kids. I'm sure your family will have a super fun time.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf {A Production of I Theatre} Review

The Boy Who Cried Wolf {A Production of I Theatre}

Every little child have heard the story of 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'. But this time, it's a different experience as we watched the story unfolded on stage. My 2 younger ones were excited to watch it. Well, my eldest girl was not as enthusiastic at first, but after the show, she had a different opinion. As it turns out, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' was as good as 'The Way Back Home' (the previous production from ITheatre).

The Costume

The soft and flurry looking costumes of the sheep were very attractive.  It caught not only the children's attention, but also mine.

"I like the sheep. They are so cute. I want to touch the fur on them." This is what my little girl said of the costume. So obviously, the production team have succeeded designing the characters.

The Stage and Space

It may seem like a normal stage but it was full of surprises. The sheep could "go up" the hill and graze.

The different levels on the stage generated more visual interest. The production team have used the space on stage brilliantly to excite the audience as the action is not only limited to the ground level. Hence the audience have to look around the stage to see the whole action. Look out for the wolf who will come from the top!!!

Interactive Theatre and appealing to the senses

"WAKE UP!!!!"
Suddenly, the shepherd jumps up.

Yes, every time when the shepherd is about to doze off, you will hear all the children shouting "WAKE UP!!!"
This is the most fun part of the Itheatre production. The audience are always involved in the play. To the children, they felt delighted to be involved. The interactive part transforms the audience to participants.  This is the part where my children look forward to when they attend the productions of Itheatre

"If you lie again, you will go to the naughty corner" said the school teacher to the shepherd. The theatre burst out laughing. No prizes for guessing why. The script is so well written and there is something that the children could identify with easily. In this case, they were so amused that the shepherd was warned and being threatened with the "naughty corner".

The brilliant use of lights and sound conveyed the appropriate mood. For instance, the sound of the siren and flashing lights were used to convey a sense of emergency and urgency. It got my kids so worked up that they straightened themselves up in their seats to ensure that they caught all the actions on stage.

The umbrella dance was a great visual spectacle. When the characters started opening up the colourful umbrellas one by one as the music plays, the eyes of the audience were glued to the stage. The dance was well choreographed - the spinning and swinging of the umbrellas were simply beautiful. We were captivated.

There is even a mini puppet show embedded in the play. The puppet show was there to serve the purpose of teaching the shepherd not to lie because of the consequences. But more important, the puppet show broke the monotony. It was a nice touch.

Educational Value
"Sheep are vegetarians. They only eat grass."
"Sheep are useful because they produce wool. Wool are used to make clothes to keep humans warm."
"It is a sheep in wolf's clothings."
"....inquisitive.... oh... being inquisitive means curious."

These are some of the things the children will learn as they watch the play. To me as a parent, this has definitely added value to the play. While being entertained, the children are also learn some general knowledge and vocabulary. I guess, this can really be classified as "edutainment".

What my children say of the play

"Can I watch this again? Please?? Mummy, I really want to watch it again. Can I come watch it again, please?"

Obviously, Faith have been bought over by the production. She is already a fan and looking forward to watching the next show - The Rainbow Fish. She even walked to the reception counter and helped herself with 'The Rainbow Fish' pamphlet when we came out of the theatre

'Good Night, Little Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister have been one of her favourite story and we have done it as part of our Literature-Based Learning. It would definitely be exciting for Faith to watch "The Rainbow Fish" and learn more about the joy of sharing.

"There will be bad/serious consequences for lying." This is the main message being conveyed in the play. It was so well delivered across that after the play, my boy told me that "I must not lie" in a very serious tone. I'm glad he learnt such an important lesson.

"What do you think, Natalie?"
" It was fun. It was not as boring as I expected it to be."
Well, to a 9 year old girl, she thinks that these shows are for preschoolers and hence "boring".

"Would you like to come with us to the next show?"
"Of course, count me in."
So obviously, the show is suitable for preschoolers to primary school-ers.
