Letter Stamp and Sponge Printing

Letter Stamp and Sponge Printing

Letter stamps

Teaching vocabulary in both English and Chinese.

The Science in the Art

The Science in the Art

The Science in the Art is where I use art as the basis to teach simple science concepts.

Activity 1
Concept: Water Resistence ( Waterproofing)
Activity: Paint a picture with the knowledge that wax has waterproof property.
What you need: Wax crayons, drawing blocks, water colour.

Use wax cryaons to draw the images.

Colour with water colour.

Activity 2
Coffee and Tea Painting

Concept: Tea and Coffee stains because of the chemical-tannin. Lemon juice can help to bleach.
Activity: Make a little of thick tea and paint a crocodile’s body with it. Then, make a little bit of coffee and use it to draw the details or decorate the crocodile. Finally, use lemon juice to bleach and make some parts of the crocodile lighter.
Observation: Coffee stains more than tea and lemon juice makes the colour of the coffee/tea lighter.
Conclusion: Coffee contains more tannin than tea. And next time, you can always use lemon juice to remove coffee or tea stains on your shirt.

The darker parts are painted with coffee. The lightest parts are painted with lemon juice. This art piece smells totally like coffee.

Activity 3

Concept: The human eyes can store a picture for a few seconds after seeing it.
Activity: Making a spinner. Cut 2 squares and draw a fish tank on one of the square and a fish on another square.

Then tape 2 straws and pieces of thread behind the picture and glue the picture of a fish tank onto the back of the upside-down fish.

Then twist the thread tight and finally letting it go and you will see the fish in the tank as the picture spins.

Activity 1-3 are ideas taken from an activity book.

Activity 4
Concept: Solid and liquid.

Activity: Making our own slime -Is slime solid or liquid??

Ingredient: Cornflour, cold water and a few drops of food dye.
Just mix them all together until you get the slime effect.

Observation: Emmanuel realised that slime feels solid when he squeezes it but it flows out of his hands when he just hold it on his palm.

Conclusion: He says that slime is both a solid and liquid.

Emmanuel just likes to observe how the slime flows through his fingers. Highlight to the child that liquid flows.
Faith ( 8 months old) is trying to squeeze the slime and she realized that it is hard and solid.
This slime is baby safe too.
It's not messy and easy to clean up as the slime will turn into flour when it dries up and all you need to do just add more cold water.

Activity 5
Concept: soluble or insoluble, solution or mixture.
Things you need: some salt crystals, sand and anything you can find in your kitchen. Paper towels can be used as filter paper too.

mixing the substance with water.

pouring the solution/mixture into the filter paper.

Observing.

writing down her observation.

This simple recording sheet just creating by me as I felt that it was important to teach her to record her observation.

3D Art and Craft

3D Art and Craft

Multi-media art encourages creativity in the child. I usually give them some random materials that I can find in my art and craft cupboard and the kids never fail to amaze me with their creativity. Here are some of their creations.

In the Garden (2+ yr old)

Fairy Land (5yrs old)

For my older girl, I encouraged her to write down what she has created so that she can increase her vocabulary and at the same time learn spelling too.

Pencil Shaving Art (7 yrs old)
One day, I was just sharpening the colour pencils and my daughter came and suggested using the pencil shaving. I gave her the pencil shaving and this was what she created.

Play dough Art  ( 1 yr old)

Quilling Fun

Quilling Fun

Fun at home on a lazy Satuarday. Quilling is really easy. It encourages creativity and is also an activity that allows the child to practice fine motor skill.

Simple quilling:

Simply find strips of construction paper. Get your child to help you roll it up and then simple shape it.
Then, glue the different colours and shapes together to form your desired image. For us, since we are learning about insects, our quilling theme is insects. So Faith wanted to make: Bumblebee, caterpillar, dragonfly, grasshopper, butterfly and spider.

For the bubblebee and dragonfly, I actually have to stick different coloured strips together before rolling them.

Happy Faith with her work. Of course, Mummy helped her with the shaping while Faith helped to roll the paper and glue them.
